Bear Lake Monster

Bear Lake is a beautiful Rocky Mountain Lake in Utah near Idaho. It is sometimes called the “Caribbean of the Rockies” due to the color of the water. There is, however, a legend of something lurking in the waters.

In 1868, a writer for the Deseret News, Joseph Rich, wrote an article about the Bear Lake Monster. In the article he reports about the local Native American’s telling him of the monster living in the lake that had taken several of their tribesman, and how they no longer allow their woman or children to go near the lake. They also would not make camp near the lake.

In the article he aslo included details of several eyewitness accounts by the local townspeople. These accounts varied greatly in the details surrounding the alleged creature. The extremes included a 90 foot long creature with huge ears that could travel through the water faster than a locomotive.

There may also be a Native legend of the creatures birth. Their legend claims that two lovers, chased by their tribe, sought refuge in the lake. The great spirit saw their plight and turned them into serpents.
