Bigfoot/Sasquatch

Bigfoot goes by many names in many different cultures and parts of the world. Many native tribes know him as Sasquatch. He is known as the Yeti in the mountains of Asia. He is also known as the skunk ape, the abominable snowman, or tak-he. Whatever name is being used it is referring to a large bipedal land mammal thought to be part man and part ape.

The native peoples of North America have had some form of Bigfoot in their oral traditions for thousands of years. It was not until 1811 that the first European American claimed to have seen one. Since then Bigfoot has become a vivid part of the American imagination. There are countless documentaries and television shows who’s purpose is the search for this creature of mythical stature.

Bigfoot is believed by some to be a very rare and intelligent great ape hiding in the deepest woodlands of America. The are with the most sightings tends to be along the Pacific Northwest, where rugged mountain terrain and lush forest offer significant hiding places for such a creature.

Many people believe that Bigfoot is an actual creature, while most people assume him to be simply a legend or hoax. The number of sightings and the similarity between eyewitness accounts offer those who believe with supporting evidence in the creatures existence although none have ever been found, dead or alive.

Bigfoot believers point to a creature in the fossil record known as Gigantopithecus as a possible source for any possible living bigfoot population. Gigantopithecus is an ancient species believed to be related to modern day orangutans.

Real or not, Bigfoot has firmly implanted itself into the folklore of America and will remain there for as long as people live and share stories in any form.
