Ogopogo

In British Columbia, Canada lies Lake Okanagan. Lake Okanagan is a large deep glacial lake. It has a similar story to that of Loch Ness in Scotland. There is believed to be a similar creature inhabiting the lake to that of Loch Ness. This creature is commonly known as Ogopogo. The history of Ogopogo goes back deep into the Native American tradition. There is a plaque mounted near the lake that reads :

“Before the unimaginative whiteman came, the fearsome lake monster N’ha·a·itk was well known to the superstitious Indians. His home was believed to be a cave at Squally Point, and small animals were carried in the canoes to appease the serpent. Ogopogo still is seen each year - but now by white men.”

The Native Legend of Ogopogo is that of a murderer, punished by the gods, turning him into a sea creature and his continued existence as this creature in the lake. This legend was continually passed on by generations of Native peoples. European Americans have also reported sightings of the creature since the colonization of the area.
