Many people know this legend. It has been recreated in movies many times over the years. The legend was originally made popular in a book by Washington Irving in 1817.

In the Irving book, the story contends that the place of Sleepy Hollow is a place under some sort of evil or magical hold. The people of the area act very peculiar to the untrained eye.

The headless horseman is given the main blame for the odd behavior of the people of the area, as he had been haunting them for some time. The story contends that the Horseman was most likely the ghost or spirit of a Hessian soldier, beheaded by cannon fire during the American Revolution.

Irving goes on to introduce the character of Ichabod Crane, a Connecticut transplant to the Sleepy Hollow area. The character of Crane most likely created to tell the tale of the Headless Horseman through the eyes of an outsider.

Perhaps there was an actual Hessian soldier beheaded in the Revolution by cannon fire buried in the cemetery at Sleepy Hollow, New York. Perhaps people in the area have seen or heard strange things at night. There are some stories where it is hard to figure out the real story behind the legend.

Although, at first, the Legend of the Headless Horseman seems simply a work of fiction, there are some facts that can be taken from the tale. First being that there is in fact a Sleepy Hollow, New York. Second, that the story seems to have been around before Irving published his version of the tale. Finally, reality can be relevant to those that experience it.
