Roman Mythology

Roman mythology, while originating much on its own, borrowed greatly from other religions such as the Greeks and to some extent the Egyptians, until being replaced by Christianity. The Romans had a different mode of though than the Greeks before they began assimilating Greek ideas into their mythology, though it is often hard to decipher what is uniquely Roman and what is borrowed.

Here are descriptions of the Major Roman Gods and Goddesses.

  • Jupiter – Jupiter was the main Roman God, a reuse or renaming of the Greek God, Zeus. Considered the god of Lightning and thunder. He was also the son of Saturn.
  • Juno – Juno was the Queen of the gods, a counterpart and possibly derived from the Greek Goddess Hera. She was also a daughter of Saturn.

  • Apollo – Apollo was quite obviously borrowed from the Greek system. To the Romans, Apollo was many things, including the god of light, music, healing and truth. He is also a son of Saturn.
  • Mars – Borrowed from the Greek god Area, Mars was also the Roman god of war, as Ares was to the Greek. Mars was also the son of Saturn and seen as the father of the Romans as he was believed to be the father of Romulus.
  • Mercury – Mercury was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Hermes, and he was the god of trade and travelers.
  • Neptune – Neptune was the God of the sea, much like Poseidon to the Greeks.
  • Venus – Originally regarded as the Goddess of vineyards to the Romans, but later after Greek influence in the form of Aphrodite, became known as the goddess of beauty and love.
  • Minerva – Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, she was also the daughter of Jupiter.
  • Saturn – God of agriculture, father of many of the other Gods.
  • Pluto – God of the afterlife or underworld.
