The Almas is a reported “wild man” of Central Asia. Unlike the Yeti, the Almas is said to be more human than ape. Reports tend to place them about the same height as modern humans, but with more hair, generally reddish brown in color.

Reports of the Almas go back many hundreds of years, and appear in folk tales of the indigenous populations and in writings of early European travelers to the area. A 1430 report by a prisoner of Khan claims to have witnessed the creatures. There have been many other reported sighting since then by European and Asian writers.

The Almas is believed to possibly be a remnant population of a previously thought extinct human species. The possibilities most likely lie with the Neanderthals or to a lesser extent maybe even Homo Erectus. Neither of these ideas have been proven, however there are claims that a woman, captured in the mountains in the 1850’s, was in fact an Almas. She was wild at the time of capture and after years of efforts she eventually became docile and even married into the local population. She had children with her husband, though many died while still infants, further raising speculation that she was in fact a different species, causing severe genetic defects of the children. A recent television show sought to answer the question by doing DNA test on a fragment of the remains of one of her children, yet no answer has been given.
