The Yeti is the Asian counterpart of the North American Bigfoot or Sasquatch legend. Some speculate that they may in fact be the same creature. Proponents of both legends often argue that they are remnant populations of the ancient Gigantopithicus.

The Yeti is most commonly reported to be seen near the high mountainous areas of modern day Tibet. The common altitudes where sitings are reported tend to be very high and above the level where human habitation is feasible. This trend in sightings tends to lead cryptozoologist, people who study creatures thought to be extinct or legendary, to the belief that a reproducing population could maintain itself for many centuries without coming into direct contact with the scientific community.

The Yeti is sometimes known as the abominable snowman. This term developed after a turn of the century expedition of Mount Everest returned to report tracks it found to a news reporter, who consequently coined the term. There is some speculation that the Yeti is a mis-identification of the bears that inhabit there area. Some even go as far as to claim that the translation of the words of the indigenous peoples of the area have led westerners to believe there is a large hominid, instead of a bear, which is what they claim the words actually mean.

Yeti, Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman, and the Skunk Ape may all be names for a similar creatures  roaming around in forest and upon mountains across the world, or it may simply be a cute imaginary creature of folklore or a mis-identification. Either way a person may lean on the issue, there is no denying the mystery or intrigue of the possibility of a large man-ape living amongst us without our knowledge.
